General Background: The union was formed in 1968 and

Teachers’ Union. The union has been protecting its member’s rights and has also
been concerned with social and communal events since its establishment. In 1993
the union has gone through a reform as changes occurred in the unions
administrative board. After the reform the union has undertaken a diagnostic
mission for the Cyprus Turkish community. In the recent years the union has
played a great role in the establishment process of “This Country is Ours
Platform” and has been actively involved in the Turkish Cypriot Social Security
Law Amendments. In brief, the union has gone through a historical progression
as it has been concerned with community events and the protection of its
members rights. Today the union has come to a much stronger position and it
plays a great role in being the voice of the Turkish Cypriot teachers as well
as the Turkish Cypriot community.

takes place in its General Assembly.
Information about the organization: KTOEOS is the
biggest organized union in the education field in Northern Cyprus. It is a
union which has over 2.300 members. The members are from Secondary Education,
Vocational Education, Primary Education Schools. The union also has members
from the Atatürk Teacher Academy which trains primary, pre-primary, early
childhood education teachers. KTOEÖS is a non governmental organization, once
every two years the union members gather in order to designate the
administrative board. The administrative board consists of 21 people. Within
the administrative board; 1 President, 1 General Secretary, 1 Organization
Secretary, 1 Education Secretary, 1 Finance Secretary is selected and by this
the union executive council is formed. In the union a Representative Committee
is also present, this committee gathers all the representatives from each
school around the Northern part of Cyprus. A representative is selected by the
teachers within that particular school. The decisions made by the
administrative board are generally based on the information which the school
representatives provide from their schools. The decisions which are made is
applied and taken into process by the executive council. Besides this, with the
leadership of the members in the administrative board many “working committees”
are formed. For example: Education Committee, Finance Committee, Equal
Opportunities Committee, Social Events Committee etc.
Activities: The main reason why the union KTOEÖS was
established was to lead their members to contemporariness within their social
and economic state. However, the union is also aware that the country’s and the
world’s political, social structure must also reach to a modern structure as it
reflects and designates their members’ future. This is why the union is
struggling to provide reforms within Social and Political fields, as well as
the Education field.
